performance management trainingToday, I came across an article about performance management training that has some very valuable tips contained inside it. It was written by a gentleman by the name of Bill Walsh who is a managing director.

I just can’t wrap my mind around it sometimes but it seems as if this subject is mostly implemented after things have already gone bad. I believe that this is something that needs to be managed all of the time no matter how well the organization is doing rather than mostly during the bad times.

Realizing Economic Success With Performance Management Training

It’s been a wild year of economic turmoil. Hopefully, a new year will bring some economic recovery. In the meantime, managers and supervisors are forced to deal with layoffs. Even with decreased headcounts, the expectations for productivity and results remain high. How do you manage to produce results with fewer human resources? It’s a challenge that performance management training addresses.

It’s more important than ever to communicate performance goals throughout a company and this information needs to be clearly conveyed throughout all levels of the organization. To get the best performance management results, we have to make sure we link individual goals to strategic goals.

It can be difficult to implement performance management systems informally, although many companies and government agencies have tried. As we said, the key to success with performance management systems is to communicate and clearly link strategic goals to each individual’s goals. Not only must each individual’s performance goals be clearly established, you also must establish a system for measuring performance and communicating feedback to the employee.

A performance management training program allows organizations to get a jump start on implementing accountability, responsibility and work standards for employees.

Performance management training in government follows the same format as traditional performance management systems; it’s merely the outcomes that differ.

Performance management training will help you establish the following:

What are the expected outcomes? What do you believe you or your company will gain from implement a performance management system. In addition to increased productivity, your company may realize an improvement in employee retention and improved morale and motivation.

How can you establish ownership? If you want a performance management training program to work in your company or government division, you need to understand how to sell the program to employees. What are the benefits you’ll realize from the system (perhaps easier supervisory tasks)? But what benefits will your employees find as a result of the system, what growth options will be available to the employees, what communication and coordination benefits? This training program also helps you identify how the program will benefit your employees.

What barriers may prevent this program from being successful? The best defense is a good offense. If you know what problems and challenges you may face, you can plan how to successfully meet these challenges.

What resources are available within your company? What resources or communication systems do you have in place to support your efforts? How can you quickly modify some of the systems to better support your efforts?

Performance management training programs show you how to implement effective communication and feedback systems.

What will be your approach? Performance management training shows you how linking individual goals to strategic goals will allow you to map out your approach. You’ll learn how to measure success and report a need for improvement.

Performance management systems can help your company maintain productivity, reduce costs or regroup during difficult times of down-sizing or economic distress. With this training, you get the tools you need to get your company back on the productive track to success.

As you can probably see by now, there are many benefits to working with a performance management training system. The best leaders I have seen in action focus on the characteristics of this system all of the time. For example, making sure people are clear on the goals of the organization along with how they fit into their role.

This type of training is very valuable but from what I have seen in my experiences is that many organizations need to be proactive with this and keep it at the top of mind as much as possible. This is one of the major keys to an organization doing well in the good times as well as the bad times.
